Best Time to Visit Okavango Delta 2026/2027
Botswana · A river that never reaches the sea — Africa's most magical wetland wilderness.
The Okavango is wonderfully counterintuitive: its flood arrives in the dry season. Rains fall far away in Angola, and the water takes months to travel down — so the delta is at its fullest from June to August, right in the middle of Botswana's dry winter. High water means mokoro (dugout canoe) safaris and water-based game viewing at their best, while the dry months concentrate elephants, buffalo, and predators around shrinking water sources.

- June – August — Peak flood: mokoro safaris, water activities, and superb game viewing combined.
- May & September — Shoulder months with high water, warm days, and slightly lower rates.
- October — Hottest, driest month — intense predator action as water recedes.
⚠️ When not to go
December – February — The wet season: hot, humid, with afternoon storms. Flood levels are at their lowest, some water activities aren't possible, and a few camps close. Birding, though, is spectacular.

Local tips
- Mokoro (dugout canoe) excursions are the delta's signature — go at sunrise.
- Nights in June–July are cold — pack a warm layer even for a Botswana trip.
